One of the men in charge of the Delta Mariner as it collided with the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge January 26th gave lengthy testimony during ongoing hearings in Paducah this morning.
Third mate Captain Frank Altany appeared nervous as he testified about the moments before and after the collision that knocked out a 322-foot span of the bridge. As heard on WPSD TV’s live webstream, Captain Altany said the crew realized they were in danger of striking the structure as they drew near.
Immediately after the collision, Captain Altany said the first goal was to be sure everyone who had been on board the cargo vessel was still on the ship.
The hearings are expected to continue at least through the end of this week at Paducah City Hall and involve the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Foss Maritime and the U.S. Coast Guard.
