Cadiz Police investigate secret shopper scam

The Cadiz Police Department is investigating a scam involving a secret shopper scenario.

According to police, victims were instructed by mail to deposit a counterfeit check worth up to $2,000 into their personal bank accounts and then required to send back $1,500 through a Western Union money order.

In a recent case, police say a victim made a $57 purchase as part of the secret shopper program as instructed and was responsible for that purchase and were out $1,500.

The company letterhead reportedly included phone numbers with a 502 area code, but the postmark on the letter was from Spain.

The Cadiz Police Department reminds citizens to always check the postmark of all mail, and if it asks for money to be sent back to them, to report it to the police.
