An inspection team is scheduled to rappel down several piers on Eggners Ferry Bridge this Thursday to further review and inspect the badly damaged bridge.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports the examination of the piers will help engineers develop about a half-dozen options to replace a 322 foot span that was knocked off the bridge when it was hit by a cargo ship last month.
The inspection team will reportedly be checking the structural integrity of several piers, especially a construction joint where new pier sections were added to increase the height of the bridge deck in the 1940’s.
In addition, Transportation Cabinet crews continue to operate two generators to provide power to navigation lights on the western section of the bridge.
Officials say power that previously came from the Trigg County side of the bridge is now being temporarily replaced by an electric line from the Marshall County side of the bridge.
Officials expect to have a new power source in place by the end of this week.
