Police citing bridge sight-seers

There will always be sight-seers after any disaster, but hundreds reportedly put themselves in danger Sunday afternoon at the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge.

Police agencies began issuing citations after the Highway Department says the Coast Guard witnessed hundreds of people putting themselves in danger by crossing the barricades and walking onto the bridge, which may be unstable.

The Transportation Cabinet said Saturday they will be placing sensors on one of the pier’s under water using divers this week after an LBL Ranger noticed one of the rails had bent, leading crews to believe the pier may be shifting.

If the pier is shifting, that means repairs on the bridge would be next to impossible and that part of the eastern end of the bridge left standing would be unsafe and unstable.

No one was injured or killed when an cargo vessel struck the eight decade old structure Thursday night and it would be an unspeakable tragedy for someone to die or be injured attempting to get a photo in its aftermath.
