What started as a traffic stop resulted in an arrest on several charges in Hopkinsville yesterday afternoon.

Hopkinsville Police Sgt. Mike Felts was attempting to stop 21-year old Reginald Buchanan, Jr. of Hopkinsville around 4:15 for driving with expired tags, according to the arrest card, which says a computer check also revealed Buchanan’s drivers’ license was suspended.

Sgt. Felts was attempting to arrest Buchanan when he allegedly pulled away and made a swing in an attempt to punch the officer. Buchanan then ran through a back yard of a residence and continued until a police K-9 unit stopped him.

A search of the vehicle also turned up a loaded handgun. Bucanan was charged with Assault of a police officer, Fleeing from Police, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and several traffic charges.
