For the second time in 48 hours, a Hopkinsville woman has been arrested for allegedly leaving her small child unattended and unsupervised.

Taken into custody just before 10 last night was 22-year old Jasmine Nicole Walton of Hopkinsville.

Hopkinsville Police responded to the report of a 2-year old child being found outside alone and crying at a 102 Charlie Court residence.

A neighbor found the girl and took her inside her apartment, as it was sleeting and 35 degrees at the time. Officers searched her home for more children and reportedly found a sleeping infant inside.

Police say Walton returned to her residence 20 minutes later and said she had been called away by a friend who was having trouble breathing. She said both children were sleeping when she left, so she felt it would be alright.

The arrest card says Walton couldn’t give an estimate on the total time she was gone. Officer Brian Smith writes that Walton never appeared to fully accept the gravity of the situation and stated she intends to sign her children over to her mother in order to join the Air Force.

She was charged with wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor and lodged in the Christian County Jail.
