Hoppers Baseball: The Hoptown Hoppers look to get back on the winning ways this evening as they host Fulton. The Railroaders pulled to within 2 ½ games of Hoptown with a 7-2 win last night. First pitch at Tiger Field is at 7:05, with air time at 6:45 on News/Talk WHOP and online at whopam.com.
Other games in the Ohio Valley League have Marion hosting Dubois County and Owensboro welcomes Madisonville.
MLB: The Cincinnati Reds open a weekend series in Atlanta this evening against the Braves while the St. Louis Cardinals open a series with the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
College Baseball: Austin Peay coach Gary McClure announced Wednesday he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the vacant coaching position at the University of Iowa. McClure said in a news release from the school he was honored to be in the process at Iowa, but felt there was more to be accomplished at Austin Peay.
The Governors won a school record 47 games this season before losing in the final of the Bloomington regional. McClure has spent 26 seasons at Austin Peay winning 799 games and losing 691. McClure is Austin Peay’s and the Ohio Valley Conference’s all time wins leader.
College Football: University of Louisville placekicker John Wallance has been named on the pre season watch list for the Lou Groza award, given annually to the nation’s top place kicker.
The Elizabethtown native connected on 16-21 field goals last season.
Kentucky sophomore punter Landon Foster is on the Ray Guy Award pre season watch list. As a true freshman, the Franklin, TN native averaged 42.9 yards per punt last season.
Golf: Play is underway today in the final major of the season for the Champions Tour, the US Senior Open at Omaha Country Club. Franklin’s Kenny Perry is one of the pre tournament favorites and is currently playing his opening round.
The final PGA Tour event before next week’s British Open is also underway as the John Deere Classic is playing its opening round today.
