Hoppers Baseball: The first place Hoptown Hoppers return to Ohio Valley League action this evening with the first of five home games this week. The Hoppers host Owensboro in a make up game from last Thursday. First pitch at Tiger Field is at 7:05, with the pre game show on the air at 6:45 on News/Talk WHOP and whopam.com.
Elsewhere in the OVL this evening, Madisonville plays a make up game at Marion.
MLB: The Cincinnati Reds open a series at Milwaukee this evening, with Atlanta meeting Miami. Interleague action includes the battle of Chicago between the Cubs and White Sox.
Washington Nationals have acquired outfielder Scott Hairston from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league pitcher Ivan Pineyro. Hairston signed a two-year deal with the Cubs in February, reportedly worth $5 million. He was batting just .172 with eight homers and 19 RBI in 52 games this season.
The 33-year-old veteran has 103 career homers and a .244 average in 829 games with Arizona, San Diego, Oakland, the Mets and the Cubs.
Pineyro, a 21-year-old right-hander, has combined for a record of 6-3 with a 3.24 ERA in 15 starts between Single-A Hagerstown and Potomac this season.
College Basketball: Kentucky Sports Radio indicates this may be the week we find out whether Kyle Wiltjer will stay at Kentucky or transfer most likely to Gonzaga. KSR reported Wiltjer visited Gonzaga recently with a mindset to commit there, but did not. Wiltjer just returned from playing for the Canadian national team in the World University games, so a decision could be announced some time this week.
College Football: Two Ohio Valley Conference players have been named to the Walter Payton Award watch list. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and wide receiver Erik Lora both of Eastern Illinois are on this year’s list. The 27th annual award, presented to the outstanding player in Football Championship Subdivision will be presented December 16th.
