Hoppers Baseball: The Ohio Valley League leading Hoptown Hoppers look for their 6th straight win as they travel to Madisonville this evening. The Hoppers lead Owensboro by 2 ½ games as the Oilers go to Marion tonight, while third place Dubois County hosts Fulton, who has also won five games in a row.
MLB: The Chicago Cubs face Milwaukee in an afternoon game, with the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves having the day off.
New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will adhere to doctor’s orders and
undergo season-ending surgery on his ailing right wrist. Teixeira's wrist had not responded well to a cortisone shot, and a recent MRI confirmed that a tendon sheath originally injured back in March has not healed adequately. Teixeira says the surgery requires 4-5 months of rest and rehabilitation, but said he expects to be 100 percent in six months.
High School Football: WPSD-Paducah reports the new McCracken County High School has released its 2013 football schedule. The Mustangs will open the season hosting Paducah Tilghman August 24th and travel to Mayfield August 30th.
Other games of note include a road game at Fort Campbell September 27th and the Mustangs will host Christian County in the regular season finale for both on November 1st.
College Basketball: Louisville forward Luke Hancock has been named as one of 16 finalists for USA Basketball’s team that will compete July 7-16 in Kazan, Russia. The 12 man team will be announced Sunday.
Hancock is continuing his tryout despite the death of his father William Monday in Virginia at the age of 70.
Kyle Wiltjer received his official release from the University of Kentucky Wednesday. Kentucky Sports Radio reports the release was sent to a small number of schools, with Gonzaga likely to be the destination for Wiltjer.
NFL: Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez could be under investigation for another murder. WXFT reports police are looking into the possibility he's connected to a 2012 double homicide. Hernandez was charged yesterday with first-degree murder in connection with the death of man near his home last week. He's currently being held without bond. The team released him yesterday.
Meanwhile, Hernandez is expected to be back in court today for a bail review hearing. NBC News is reporting Hernandez will appeal a judge's ruling that he be held without bail on first-degree murder. A bail review hearing is set for this afternoon. Hernandez spent the night at the Bristol County Jail in Dartmouth, Massachusetts following his arrest yesterday.
NBA: The 2013 NBA Draft will take place this evening at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Cleveland Cavaliers have the top pick, but there aren't expected to be any franchise players among this year's crop. Kentucky center Nerlens Noel is expected to selected with the top overall pick. Noel, though, is currently rehabbing a torn left ACL suffered in February.
Wimbledon: After a Wednesday of injuries and upsets, it's been a relatively quiet day at the All England Club, so far. Women's second-round winners today have included top-seeded Serena Williams and former Grand Slam champions Li Na and Samantha Stosur. Men's second-round play today includes matches for top-seeded Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer.
