The Lexington Herald Leader reported Sunday a new proposal would place the Kentucky High School Athletics Association in charge of middle school athletics. Commissioner Julian Tackett says the lack of statewide oversight has led schools to playing more games than what is considered safe and parents having students repeat a grade solely for athletic purposes has led to the proposal.
Tackett adds the KHSAA would deal with middle schools under a different model than the KHSAA. It would call for the KHSAA providing staff and coordinating a 21 member regionally balanced committee composed mostly of middle school administrators who have experience in athletics. The state board of education approved the measure earlier this year and it’s now being studied by state lawmakers.
