High School Basketball
Boys: Todd Central hosts Fort Campbell, Logan County goes to Henderson County, Dawson Springs travels to Lyon County.
Girls: Todd Central welcomes Fort Campbell, Russellville at Warren East, Logan County goes to South Warren, Trigg County at Hopkins Central, Union County at Ohio County, Bowling Green at Glasgow, Greenwood hosts Caverna.
High School Wrestling: Christian County placed 7th over the weekend at the Harpeth Invitational in Kingston Springs, TN. Kevi Matlock was the champion in the 138 pound class, with Kory Polley winning at 145. The Colonels are back in action Saturday at the Derby City Classic in Louisville.
Sunday’s Scores: Former Christian County standout Donovan Kates scored 4 points in Manhattan’s 67-55 loss to George Washington Sunday. Kates also had three rebounds and an assist in the game.
Women’s scores: Janee Thompson hit a three point basket with 8.4 seconds left Sunday to give 9th ranked Kentucky a 48-47 victory over 7th ranked Louisville.
Two hours of University of Kentucky sports talk airs tonight on Lite 98.7. Coach John Calipari has his call in show at 5, with a special show with new football coach Mark Stoops airing at 6.
Kentucky introduced Mark Stoops as its new football coach Sunday, less than 24 hours after his old school Florida State won the ACC football championship.
Stoops said at his news conference one of his goals is not for Kentucky to just play in the SEC championship game, but to win it as well. Stoops also said the Wildcats will play an offense every one will enjoy, but will build the foundation of his team around defense. Athletics director Mitch Barnhart says Stoops’ deal for five years will pay a base salary of $11 million plus incentives.
Two teams from the Commonwealth are heading to bowl games. Western Kentucky will make its first ever bowl appearance in the Little Caesar’s Bowl December 26th at Ford Field in Detroit against Central Michigan.
Number 22 Louisville will meet 4th ranked Florida in the Sugar Bowl to be played January 2nd in New Orleans.
Vanderbilt will also play in a bowl game, meeting North Carolina State in the Music City Bowl December 31st in Nashville.
The Tennessean reports Vanderbilt has given football coach James Franklin a revised “long term” commitment for the second year in a row. No details of the deal were released other than to say that there will be more money and guarantees of continous facility upgrades and funding for assistant coaches
NFL: Matt Schaub tossed for 207 yards and two scores as the Houston Texans defeated the Tennessee Titans 24-10 to secure a postseason berth. Adrian Foster ran for 38 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries for Houston, which improved to 11-and-1. Jake Locker threw for 309 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions for Tennessee, which dropped to 4-and-8. He also lost a pair of fumbles. Kenny Britt hauled in two balls for 40 yards and the TD in defeat.
