College Basketball: The Ohio Valley Conference is having its basketball media day today in Nashville. Murray State has been picked to win the West division, while newcomer Belmont has been picked in the East division.
Austin Peay was picked to finish third in the West division. Murray State’s Isaiah Cannan was named as the pre season OVC player of the year. Cannan was named to the OVC pre season team along with fellow Racer Ed Daniel.
On the women's side, UT Martin was picked to win the West division, with Murray State 4th and Austin Peay 5th. Tennessee Tech was picked to win the East division. Murray State's Erica Burgess was selected to the preseason All OVC team.
University of Minnesota athletics director Norwood Teague tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune he has not decided as to the length of suspension of Gophers assistant basketball coach Saul Smith or if he can return to his father Tubby’s staff.
The younger Smith was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of DWI charges after leaving a Minneapolis restaurant. Smith was placed on indefinite suspension without pay.
NFL: Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday night the league is considering dropping the Pro Bowl game. Appearing on the SiriusXM NFL Radio’s “Town Hall” program, Goodell said if the level of play is not of high standard, the game would be dropped. However, fans, coaches and players would continue to vote for the Pro Bowl teams, but the game would not be played.
MLB: The Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants will workout today ahead of their game 1 meeting in the World Series tomorrow night at AT&T Park in San Francisco. It will be the first times the teams have met in the World Series.
