Monday’s High School Sports Schedule
Volleyball: Heritage Christian Academy plays at Clarksville Academy, Trigg County at Mayfield, Crittenden County at Hopkins Central, Webster County hosts Union County.
Boys Soccer: Christian County goes to Todd Central, Dawson Springs at Hopkins Central, Trigg County at Lyon County, Logan County at Warren East.
Girls Soccer: Dawson Springs at Hopkins Central
Golf: University Heights, Christian County and Henderson County play a quad match at Hopkinsville.
College Football: The regular season begins across the nation this week, including Kentucky at Louisville next Sunday. Coach Joker Phillips will talk about the upcoming season on his weekly talk show at 5 this evening on Lite 98.7, to be followed by Big Blue Weekly at 6. The game airs beginning at 1 next Sunday afternoon also on Lite 98.7.
Tennessee coach Derek Dooley says the Volunteers are much better equipped to deal with adversity this season. The Vols already have a major distraction following the suspension of All SEC wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers. Coach Dooley notes this year’s team has more depth and experience and will not have a single freshman atop the depth chart when opening the season Friday night against North Carolina State in Atlanta.
Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart has picked two seniors and a junior to be captains for Saturday’s season opener against Austin Peay. Senior tight end Jack Doyle and defensive lineman Jamarcus Allen and junior punter Hendrix Brakefield will do the honors. Taggart tells the Bowling Green Daily News his team will probably be ready to play two games when facing the Governors Saturday.
Murray State also kicks off its season Saturday in Tallahassee, Florida against one of the top ranked teams in the nation in Florida State.
NFL: ESPN is reporting that former Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young wrote on Twitter today he has been cut by the Buffalo Bills, though no official announcement has been made.
Young made the comment on Twitter after learning the Bills agreed to a restructured contract with signal caller Tavarius Jackson, which a source says was the last hurdle in completing his trade with Seattle. Young had signed a one year $2 million dollar deal with the Bills in May.
Major League Baseball action this evening includes St. Louis at Pittsburgh, Chicago hosts Milwaukee, Cincinnati at Arizona and Atlanta at San Diego.
The Goodlettsville, TN team which won the United States championship of the Little League World Series will return today. The team lost in the World championship to Japan 12-2 Sunday.
The childhood home of boxing great Muhammad Ali is for sale in Louisville. Owner Steve Stephenson says he’s asking $50,000 for the small white house in a western Louisville neighborhood. A state historical marker is in front of the home recognizing the residence as Ali’s boyhood home when he was known as Cassius Clay.
