Last night in the OVL: Marion inched closer to first place Hoptown with a 13-2 win over Owensboro. The Bobcats, now 9-5 are a half game behind the Hoppers. Madisonville won its third game in a row, defeating Fulton 8-5 in 11 innings.
Tonight in the OVL: In addition to the Hoptown-Owensboro game, Fulton travels to Marion.
Golf: Two Pennyrile area golfers are among four tied for the lead following the first round of the Kentucky State Amateur Championship at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville. Trigg County’s Tyler Mitchell and defending champion Patrick Newcomb are among a quartet who fired an opening round three under par 68. Round two takes place today.
Princeton’s Emma Talley is playing in the 112th National Amateur Championship this week at the Monroe Golf and Country Club in Monroe, Michigan. The Princeton Times Leader reports Talley shot rounds of 77 and 75 the last two days in stroke play. The University of Alabama freshman to be plays Meredith Fairbairn of Canada in match play today.
College Basketball: Tickets for University of Kentucky basketball games will get a little pricier next season. During Tuesday’s Board of Trustees Athletics Committee meeting, the board voted to raise single game ticket prices by $7 for upper level seating and $10 in the lower levels of Rupp Arena.
The committee approved higher donation requirements to the K-Fund for season ticket holders, who will see ticket prices go up $5 per game. Athletic director Mitch Barnhart says the price increases are necessary to offset escalating costs.
NFL: The Tennessee Titans and safety Michael Griffin have agreed to terms on a five year contract. The Tennessean reports the deal is worth $36 million, with $15 million guaranteed and a $9 million signing bonus. The five year veteran was tagged as the franchise player back in March.
NHL: The National Hockey League presents its annual awards this evening. Nashville Predator captain Shea Weber is up for the Norris Award for the league’s top defenseman, Pekka Rinne is up for the Vezina Award for top goalie, David Poile is up for general manager of the year and Mike Fisher is a nominee for the NHL’s Community Service award. The event takes place in Las Vegas.
