Southeastern Conference football coaches say they are having a difficult time tweaking their football schedules now that Missouri and Texas A&M are in the league. Coaches are trying to decide at this week’s SEC spring meeting in Destin, Florida whether to play an eight or nine game conference schedule and whether to maintain cross division rival games like Tennessee-Alabama.
However, basketball coaches are in agreement of an 18 game league schedule which would keep all 14 teams together instead of having divisional play. Teams would play everyone at least once (13 games) and have a home and home series with a designated rival.
Those rival games are Kentucky-Florida, Tennessee-Vanderbilt, LSU-Texas A&M, Georgia-South Carolina, Alabama-Auburn and Arkansas-Missouri. The other four games each season would be filled by the remaining 12 teams on a rotating basis.
South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier is again proposing giving football players at SEC schools a stipend. The NCAA is currently mulling over a proposal to give players a $2,000 stipend. Spurrier’s measure goes one step further, allowing athletes in revenue producing sports to receive between $3,500 and $4,000 for the entire year to cover expenses. Spurrier says all 14 SEC coaches agree with him on his measure in principle.
