High School Softball: Hopkins Central defeated University Heights 8-4 and Heritage Christian defeated Lakeside Christian 11-7 in 8 innings.
Pairings for the first round of the KHSAA Softball and Baseball state tournaments were announced Friday.
Softball: Region 2 will face Region 9 in its first game, Region 1 faces Region 5, Region 3 meets Region 15 and Region 4 takes on Region 11. The state tournament will be played June 7-9 at Jack Fisher Park in Owensboro.
Baseball: Region 2 faces Region 8, Region 1 faces Region 3 and Region 4 faces Region 5. The state tournament will be played June 4-9 at Whitaker Bank Park in Lexington.
College Football: Kentucky concludes spring practice today with the Blue-White game at Commonwealth Stadium. You can hear the game this afternoon at 4:30 on Newstalk 95.3 FM/1230 AM WHOP.
The Courier Journal reports Kentucky tailback Brandon Gainer is leaving the team. A UK athletic department spokesman confirmed it Friday afternoon. Gainer is the eighth player to leave the team since the end of last season. Gainer would have been a red shirt sophomore this fall and did not participate in spring practice in order to concentrate of academics.
The Tennessee Vols also conclude spring practice today with the Orange-White game at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.
College Basketball: The University of Pikeville announced Friday Elisha Justice will transfer from the University of Louisville to join their program. Justice, who will have two years eligibility remaining, was the 2010 Kentucky Mr. Basketball and the Gatorade Player of the Year.
Western Kentucky’s women’s team received its third commitment this week according to the Bowling Green Daily News. Kendall Noble from Perry County Central chose Western over Middle Tennessee and Xavier.
College Baseball: Austin Peay defeated Eastern Kentucky 10-9, with game 2 of the series this afternoon in Richmond. Murray State held on to beat Jacksonville State 5-4, with game two of the series this afternoon at Jacksonville State .
Western Kentucky lost to Troy 13-3. Former Hopkinsville High pitcher Justin Hageman took the loss. Hageman allowed six earned runs on five hits and walked seven in 4 2/3 innings. The teams play again this afternoon in Bowling Green.
NHL: The Nashville Predators eliminated the Detroit Red Wings from the Stanley Cup playoffs with a thrilling 2-1 in front of a sold out Bridgestone Arena Friday night. David Legwand’s goal 13 seconds into the third period proved to be the game winner for Nashville. The Predators advance to the second round and will await to see who their opponent is.
Minor League Baseball: The Bowling Green Hot Rods won a rain shortened game over Cedar Rapids 6-2. The Hot Rods conclude their series with Cedar Rapids this evening.The Nashville Sounds lost the finale of their series to Oklahoma City 2-1. The Sounds open a four game series tonight at Omaha.
PGA Tour: Neither Kentuckians Steve Flesch or JB Holmes made the cut at the Texas Valero Open. Former British Open winner Ben Curtis has a two shot lead heading into today’s third round.
Champions Tour: Kenny Perry and Russ Cochran fired a 10 under par 62 in the first round of the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in Savannah, Georgia. They trail leaders Brad Bryant and Tom Purtzer by two shots heading into today’s second round.
