The Henderson Gleaner reports Henderson County basketball coach Mark Starns contract will not be renewed. Starns was 99-45 during his five year tenure with the Colonels. But in each of those years, Henderson County lost to the eventual regional champion. In making the decision, Henderson County High principal Sally Sugg wanted to take the basketball program in a different direction.
Western Kentucky basketball coach Ray Harper has announced the signing of junior college point guard Brandon Harris. Harris comes to Bowling Green from Otero Junior College in Colorado. Harris is an Oklahoma City native and the first recruit in Western’s 2012 recruiting class.
South Carolina has cancelled the final two games of a contract with Western Kentucky. The contract was part of deal made when Darrin Horn left the Hilltoppers to coach the Gamecocks. South Carolina recently hired Kansas State’s Frank Martin as its new coach. The Gamecocks won the two games that were played in the series.
Murray State’s women’s basketball program has announced the signing of 5-7 guard Alyssa Like from Olney Central Junior College. Like—who will be a junior this fall—averaged 16.6 points and 5 and a half rebounds per game last season. Like is a native of Poseyville, Indiana.
College Baseball: Austin Peay opens a three game Ohio Valley Conference series at Eastern Kentucky this afternoon, Murray State opens a three game OVC set at Jacksonville State this evening.
Western Kentucky begins a three game Sun Belt Conference series with Troy this evening. Former Hopkinsville High pitcher Justin Hageman gets the start for the Hilltoppers.
MLB: The Cincinnati Reds open a weekend series this afternoon in Chicago against the Cubs, while St. Louis plays at Pittsburgh this evening and Atlanta plays again at Arizona later tonight.
The St. Louis Cardinals are set to place first baseman Lance Berkman on the 15 day disabled list. Berkman aggravated a calf injury chasing a pop up. Utility infielder Skip Schumaker will be activated from the DL and join the club this evening in Pittsburgh.
