WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge reports Murray State basketball coach Steve Prohm has contacted LSU about its vacant coaching position. However, LSU officials say Prohm is not a candidate for the job. Prohm just finished his first season as Murray State head coach, leading the Racers to a 31-2 mark and a third round trip to the NCAA tournament. LSU is searching for a replacement for Trent Johnson, who resigned earlier this week to become the new coach at TCU.
The Hattiesburg American reports three names with Kentucky ties are being mentioned as possible candidates for the basketball coaching position at Southern Mississippi. Former UK player Sean Woods—currently the coach at Mississippi Valley State, John Pelphrey—former head coach at Arkansas and South Alabama and currently an assistant at Florida and Kenny Payne, a current assistant at Kentucky who played collegiately at Louisville are being mentioned as Larry Eustachy’s replacement. Eustachy was named the new head coach at Colorado State Thursday.
ESPN reports a source close to former Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino as saying Petrino will not appeal the decision to terminate his contract. Petrino’s contract had an 18 million dollar buyout if he was terminated without cause. However, he was fired Tuesday for violating a morals clause and will receive no further compensation. Petrino has accepted responsibility for his actions and resulting termination.
As the St. Louis Cardinals play their home opener against the Chicago Cubs this afternoon, the Redbirds could be without the services of first baseman Lance Berkman for the weekend series. Berkman has been bothered by a left calf strain and an MRI showed no significant problems. Berkman said Thursday the calf was improved from a day earlier and considers himself day to day.
College Baseball: Austin Peay and Murray State play a weekend Ohio Valley Conference series beginning this evening at 6 at Raymond C. Hand park in Clarksville. The other games will play at 2 pm Saturday and Sunday.
Western Kentucky opens a weekend series this evening at Arkansas State, with former Hopkinsvile High pitcher Justin Hageman to get the start this evening. Hageman has a 2-3 record, with a 5.66 ERA.
