Representatives for the Hoptown Hoppers were on hand at the Kiwanis Club meeting Thursday to tell the history of Hoppers baseball and tell about the new Ohio Valley League coming to town this summer. Team president Carter Hendricks says sponsorships are still needed, along with those who would be interested in housing players this summer and that season passes are now available.

The Louisville Cardinals got 15 points and eight rebounds from Chane Behanan in defeating Michigan State 57-44 in West Regional action in Phoenix. Russ Smith added 11 for the Cards who now face Florida who defeated Marquette 68-58 in the other semi final. Louisville and Florida play Saturday.
In the East Regional, top seed Syracuse held off Wisconsin 64-63 and Ohio State defeated Cincinnati 81-66. Syracuse and Ohio State meet in Boston tomorrow in the East Regional final.
Top seed Kentucky meets Indiana in a rematch of one of the two losses for the Wildcats this season in a South Regional semi final tonight in Atlanta. Tipoff at 8:45, with pre game coverage at 7 on Lite 98.7. The winner meets either Baylor or Xavier, who play in the first game on Sunday.
In the Midwest region semifinals in St. Louis, North Carolina meets Ohio University, without the services of guard Kendall Marshall who broke the wrist in his non shooting hand against Creighton Sunday, with the other game featuring Kansas and North Carolina State. ESPN reported Thursday Kentucky freshman Michael Kidd Gilchrist is going to the NBA Draft, however the Courier Journal reports Kidd Gilchrist said on Twitter that he does not know where the report is coming from and that it was his decision whether he would return or go pro. Earlier this month, Kidd Gilchrist said he planned to stay all four years at Kentucky.
UK signee Alex Poythress was named Tennessee’s Gatorade Player of the Year Thursday. The Clarksville Northeast senior averaged 28 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks this past season. Poythress is also a McDonald’s All American selection.
Western Kentucky University hired a new women’s basketball coach Thursday. Former Lady Topper Michelle Clark-Heard will replace Mary Taylor Cowles. Clark played for Western from 1987-90. She has been an assistant coach at Louisville the last five seasons and before that served two years as head coach at Division Two Kentucky State.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck says he understands why the Titans tried to sign free agent quarterback Peyton Manning. Hasselbeck sais Thursday he has a ton of respect for Manning and expected there would be interest from the Titans. Hasselbeck says he plans to move on and take care of what he controls.
The Nashville Predators lost at Pittsburgh 5-1 Thursday night, with Alexander Radulov—playing in his first game since 2008—scoring Nashville’s lone goal. The Predators are back in action tomorrow night hosting the Winnipeg Jets at 6 in Bridgestone Arena.
