All but one team west of I-65 are eliminated following Thursday’s first round play. Bowling Green lost to Oldham County 55-48, while Knott County Central defeated Boone County 71-54. First region winner Marshall County was routed by Scott County 59-43 with 5th region winner John Hardin defeating Johnson Central 49-36.
Today’s quarterfinal games: Rowan County meets Southwestern at 11 am Hopkinsville time, followed by Trinity and Clark County.

The clock struck midnight for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers as their seven game winning streak came to an end to top seed Kentucky in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament 81-66 in Louisville. Terrence Jones had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the 33-2 Wildcats. Western Kentucky was led by TJ Price’s 21 points in ending the season 16-19.
Next for Kentucky is a Saturday date with Iowa State, who upset Connecticut 77-54. Pre game coverage begins at 5 on Lite 98.7, with tip off at 6:45.
Also in Louisville Thursday, Murray State improved to 31-1 on the season with a 58-41 win over Colorado State. Isaiah Cannan pitched in 15 points to lead the Racers, with Donte Poole adding 13. Murray State faces Marquette who defeated BYU 88-68. Tip off at 4:15 on Saturday.
The Louisville Cardinals defeated Davidson 69-62 in its first game of the West Regional in Portland, Oregon. The Cards got 17 points from Peyton Siva and 14 from Chane Behanan as they improved to 27-9. Louisville meets New Mexico at 8:40 pm on Saturday.
Vanderbilt defeated Harvard 79-70 behind John Jenkins 27 points. The Commodores will face Wisconsin who defeated Montana 73-49 at 5:10 Saturday.
NCAA tournament action continues today including games in Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. In the East regional: Cincinnati meets Texas at 11:15 am, followed by Florida State and St. Bonaventure. In the Midwest regional: Michigan plays Ohio at 6:20 pm, followed by Temple and South Florida.
Belmont of the Atlantic Sun plays in Columbus, Ohio in the Midwest regional meeting Georgetown this afternoon.
Another Southeastern Conference school is looking for a new basketball coach. Mississippi State’s Rick Stansbury announced his retirement after 14 seasons on Thursday. Stansbury led the Bulldogs to a 293-166 record including 11 post season appearances. However, Mississippi State collapsed at the end of this season, losing seven of its last nine games.
The Tennessee Titans bolstered their offensive line by signing all pro guard Steve Hutchison to a multi year contract on Thursday. The Tennessean reports the deal is for three years, worth about 16 million dollars.
The Nashville Predators lose in a shootout at San Jose 2-1. Nashville is back in action Saturday night at Los Angeles.
Franklin’s Kenny Perry fired a 66 in the opening round of the Transitions Championship in Tampa, Florida. Padraig Harrington is the leader after shooting a blistering 10 under 61 in setting the course record.
