Fort Campbell coach Shawn Berner has been named the Kentucky Football Coaches Association Class 3-A District 1 Coach of the Year according to an online story on the Kentucky New Era's website. Berner won his 100th game as Falcons coach in the regular season finale against Hopkinsville. Fort Campbell puts its 9-4 record on the line Friday night against top ranked Louisville Central Friday night at Fryar Stadium.
High School Soccer
The Kentucky High School Athletics Association is proposing realignment for soccer playing schools. The measure, proposed at last week’s Board of Control meeting, calls for the revamp of the 16 regions, using the current basketball alignment as its model. The 8th district would consist of the four local schools, Hopkinsville, Christian County, Fort Campbell and University Heights. If the realignment measure passes, it would go in effect next school year.
Turnovers and poor free throw shooting plagued Austin Peay as they fell to Bowling Green 82-72 in the second round of the CBE Classic Monday night. Former University Heights player Tyshwan Edmondson had 9 points and 6 rebounds in 30 minutes. The Governors face George Washington in today’s action at 4 pm.
Tennessee lost to Duke 77-67 in the first round of the Maui Invitational. The Vols will meet the Memphis Tigers in action today.
Vanderbilt gets a last second shot in defeating Oregon State 64-62. Brad Tinsley hit the game winner with 4.5 seconds left.
The Louisville Cardinals host Arkansas State, with tipoff at 6 Hopkinsville time.
Austin Peay’s Lady Governors are back in action, playing a matinee game at 11th ranked Louisville.
During his Monday news conference, Kentucky coach Joker Phillips told reporters there was a bright side to not going to a bowl game this season. Phillips says without an extra month of practice and game preparation, the Wildcat coaching staff can hit the road for recruiting. Kentucky closes out the season hosting Tennessee Saturday, with pre game coverage at 9:30 am on Lite 98.7.
The Louisville Cardinals take on South Florida Saturday, with coach Charlie Strong telling his players their focus at hand is on defeating the Bulls, and not worrying about which bowl game the Cards will play in.
Vanderbilt coach James Franklin says he will use a video of Tennessee coach Derek Dooley’s post game talk to his team following the Vols 27-21 overtime win last Saturday as motivation. Franklin says the video and the words will be talked about a lot before the Vols play in Nashville next season. Vols coach Derek Dooley says he is disappointed a video of the post game celebration is out, but says it’s the world in which we live in.
Western Kentucky running back Bobby Rainey was named the Sun Belt Offensive player of the week Monday. The Hilltopper senior rushed for a season high 214 yards in last Saturday’s win at North Texas. It was Rainey’s second 200 yard rushing game of the season.
Meanwhile, Hilltopper coach Willie Taggart wants Houchens LT Smith Stadium full when the Hilltoppers host Troy at 11:30 am Saturday. Western Kentucky is bowl eligible, but a win over the Trojans would help solidify bowl chances.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is expected to start Sunday when the Titans host Tampa Bay. The Tennessean reports it’s believed a few days of rest will rejuvenate Hasselbeck’s injured right elbow which he suffered in Sunday’s loss at Atlanta.
