Wednesday’s High School Sports Scores
Soccer: Both western Kentucky teams still alive in the Boys state soccer tournament lost in last night’s semifinal games at Dunbar High School in Lexington. Henderson County was shutout by host Dunbar 2-0 and Bowling Green was blanked 3-0 by Trinity. Dunbar and Trinity will play in the state championship game on Saturday.
Today’s games: Girls state semifinal action at Dunbar High School in Lexington has Notre Dame meeting Tates Creek and North Oldham goes against Sacred Heart. The winners will play for the state championship on Saturday.
High School Football: Christian County, Hopkinsville and Fort Campbell will go through final walkthroughs today for their opening round games in the Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl tomorrow night.
Christian County hosts Barren County in 5-A action, while Hopkinsville travels to Warren Central. Coverage of both games with the Heritage Bank pregame show begins at 6:35 tomorrow night on News/Talk WHOP and whopam.com.
Fort Campbell opens 3-A action taking on Edmonson County at Fryar Stadium tomorrow night at 7 pm.
Bluegrass Preps.com has released its final polls of the regular season. Caldwell County remains first in 2-A, with Murray High sixth and Owensboro Catholic ninth.
Mayfield is atop the Class A poll with Russellville second. Wayne County tops the 3-A poll with Paducah Tilghman 4th and South Warren 5th. Highlands is first in 4-A, Bowling Green tops the 5-A poll with Warren Central 8th. Scott County heads the 6-A poll, with McCracken County seventh and Henderson County 10th.
College Basketball: Louisville concluded exhibition action last night with a 90-61 win over Pikeville. The third ranked Cardinals were led in scoring by Chris Jones with 19 points and Montrezl Harrell added 18. Kevin Ware who severely injured his right leg in last season’s NCAA tournament game against Duke also saw 10 minutes of action and scored six points. The Cardinals open the season Saturday hosting Charleston Southern.
Vanderbilt won its lone exhibition game defeating Alabama Huntsville 66-60 last night at Memorial Gym. The Commodores open the season Tuesday night hosting Georgia State.
NHL: Colin Wilson had two goals and two assists, Viktor Stalberg added a goal and an assist, and the Nashville Predators beat the Colorado Avalanche 6-4 last night. The Predators return to action at Winnipeg Friday night.
NFL: Tennessee Titans safety Michael Griffin was back in practice Wednesday after missing Sunday’s game with the St. Louis Rams. Griffin hurt his right quadriceps during the Titans loss to San Francisco last month and even an off week could not help Griffin be able to return to action.
Sunday’s game was the first Griffin has missed since coming to the league as a first round draft pick in 2007. The Titans host the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday at noon in LP Field.
Golf: The PGA of America announced Wednesday the purse for next year’s PGA Championship will be $10 million. It’s an increase of $2 million over this year’s tournament. The 2014 PGA Championship will be contested for the third time since 1996 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.
