College Football: There’s several season openers taking place this evening. Games of note include Miami hosting Florida Atlantic, Texas Tech meets SMU, Michigan State hosts Western Michigan, Houston hosts Southern University, Kansas State welcomes North Dakota and Arizona entertains Northern Arizona.
College Basketball: Former Indiana commitment James Blackmon, Jr. took an unofficial visit to the University of Kentucky on Thursday. Blackmon spent five hours on campus according to the Courier Journal and spoke with Coach John Calipari.
Calipari told Blackmon if he came to UK, he would be used as shooting guard and point guard. Blackmon said he scheduled his official visit during the weekend of Big Blue Madness. Blackmon’s father played for the Wildcats in the 1980’s.
MLB: The Cincinnati Reds begin the day 3 ½ games behind St. Louis as they open a series in Denver against the Colorado Rockies. Pre game coverage airs at 7:10 this evening on News/Talk WHOP.
Other NL action includes the Chicago Cubs hosting Philadelphia this afternoon, with St. Louis opening a series in Pittsburgh this evening. The Cardinals lead the Pirates by a ½ game in the NL Central. Atlanta opens a weekend series with the Miami Marlins.
NFL: Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been cleared for the season opener against Philadelphia September 9th, however his doctor still has concerns.
ESPN reports coach Mike Shanahan said following last night’s pre season game with Tampa Bay he will speak with Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery on Griffin’s right knee. Shanahan says he will also speak with RGIII before announcing if he will play in the game. That announcement will come early next week.
