High School Volleyball: As the new season begins next week, the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association has released its pre season top 25. Only two teams from west of I-65 are in the poll, with Owensboro Catholic 18th and McCracken County 20th. Louisville Assumption was selected as pre season number one.
College Football: Western Kentucky will host a Southeastern Conference team for the first time in school history as part of a three game series with Vanderbilt. WKU athletics director Todd Stewart announced Wednesday the game in Bowling Green will be September 4, 2016 with two of the games in Nashville on September 12, 2015 and November 4, 2017.
Kentucky offensive coordinator Neal Brown said following Wednesday’s practice the Wildcats may not publicly name a starting quarterback before the August 31st matchup with Western Kentucky at Nashville’s LP Field. Brown said he figures why tell the Hilltoppers who the starter will be, adding quote: “Let them figure it out.”
Meanwhile, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops was extremely happy with the Wednesday practice session. Stoops said he was very pleased with some things that both the offense and defense did. Stoops also said junior college transfer Nate Willis arrived on campus Wednesday and is expected to begin workouts with the team today.
College Basketball: ESPN announced Wednesday its College Game Day show will make an appearance in Rupp Arena during the 2013-14 season. The Game Day crew will be on hand when Kentucky hosts Florida on February 15th.
Murray State is beginning its first RACERHOOPALOOZA event on campus today. A late summer reunion of former Murray State players and coaches is taking place with a dinner and silent auction this evening, with former Racer head coach Mark Gottfried the guest of honor. There will also be a golf tournament to be held tomorrow at Murray Country Club.
Golf: Nashville native Brandt Snedeker and Lexington native Josh Teater are both in the field for the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship which begins today. Both men have late morning tee times.
The Champions Tour’s Dick’s Sporting Goods Open begins tomorrow, with Schwab Cup points leader Kenny Perry and Paducah’s Russ Cochran both in the field.
