High School Golf: 2013 Women’s City Am champion Anna Moore began her high school season for University Heights winning the Muhlenberg County Invitational Monday at Central City Country Club.
Moore fired a very impressive 71. Hopkinsville finished third in the team event with a 370. Dacie Bolton led Hopkinsville with an 88. Henderson County won the team title with a 315 score, winning by 29 strokes according to media reports.
Princeton’s Emma Talley is tied for second following the first round of stroke play at the US Women’s Amateur at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, SC. Talley fired an opening round even par 71.
The University of Alabama sophomore to be is two shots behind leader 15-year-old Allisen Corpuz of Hawaii. The final round of stroke play is today, with the top 64 scorers advancing to match play that begins Wednesday.
A strong field begins play in the 94th Kentucky Open today at Olde Stone Golf Club in Bowling Green. Hopkinsville’s Dayton Jones is among the amateurs, while professional Mitchell Moore also of Hopkinsville and Tyler Mitchell of Cadiz are also in the field.
College Football: The University of Kentucky began fall practice Monday. The Wildcats had their annual media day before taking the field in the afternoon.
Coach Mark Stoops says he wants fans excited about the program, but understands fans know where the program is now and how much work there is to do.
Stoops announced two 2013 signees would not be eligible this season. Defensive end Alvonte Bell of Miramar, FL and offensive lineman Justin Day of Aiken, SC did not qualify academically. Stoops also announced that safety Ashely Lowery, injured in a May car crash, has been cleared to practice, however Stoops has not named a penalty for the DUI Lowery received.
Following the first workout, Coach Stoops says he was pleased with the improvement the players have made from the spring.
University of Louisville coach Charlie Strong had a news conference Monday announcing former Auburn running back Michael Dyer would join the Cardinals. Dyer—MVP of the 2011 BCS national championship game while at Auburn—was dismissed from the team later that year for violating team rules. He tried in 2012 to hook on at Arkansas State but never played a down after a traffic stop unveiled possession of marijuana and a hand gun.
Strong said Dyer would sign a zero tolerance behavior contract. The Cardinals begin fall workouts today.
Western Kentucky opened its fall practice Monday. Coach Bobby Petrino said following the workout he was pleased with the freshmen, though they made mistakes, there is some good talent. Petrino said overall his players came out with a great attitude and worked extremely hard.
The Ohio Valley Conference announced Monday a number of its games this season would be aired online on ESPN 3. One of those contests is the Austin Peay-Murray State game on October 19th at Stewart Stadium in Murray. Kickoff is set for 3 pm that day.
