College Football: The University of Kentucky is having its media day today before the first workout of fall camp. Coach Mark Stoops says the first goal for the 2013 season is just improvement, drastic improvement. Stoops indicated he wants the Wildcat defense to play hard and have some toughness about them. Concerning the offense, particularly the quarterback situation, Stoops will make the ultimate decision with input from offensive coordinator Neal Brown.
Stoops also commented safety Ashely Lowery has been cleared to begin practice following a car accident in May. However, Stoops said he has not named a penalty for the DUI charge Lowery received.
It was also announced two 2013 signees would not be eligible this season. Defensive end Alvonte Bell from Miramar, FL and offensive lineman Justin Day of Aiken, SC did not qualify academically to play this season. Day told the Courier Journal Sunday he will enroll at Georgia Military College.
The new Wildcat coach also said he wants fans excited about the program, but understands fans know where they are right now and how much work they have to do.
Louisville coach Charlie Strong reportedly had a late morning news conference from what sources say was to talk about running back Michael Dyer transferring from Auburn to U of L. Dyer announced on Friday his plans to enroll at Louisville this week and begin workouts. He would be eligible to play for the Cards this season.
Western Kentucky running back Leon Allen is free on $300 bond following his Sunday arrest. The Bowling Green Daily News reported Allen was charged with second degree disorderly conduct early Sunday morning. A WKU spokesman says the school is looking into the incident and offered no further details. Allen was the Hilltoppers second leading rusher last season. He is also the fifth player to be arrested during the off season.
The NCAA is looking into memorabilia signed by last year's Heisman Trophy winner. ESPN sites two sources saying that Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel signed memorabilia for a five-figure flat fee while visiting South Florida for the BCS National Championship Game in January. The sources saw the signings but did not witness any exchange of money.
MLB: The Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs have the day off today, while St. Louis hosts Los Angeles and East leader Atlanta takes on Washington.
Golf: Princeton’s Emma Talley is playing in the first day of the stroke play portion of the US Women’s Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, SC. The stroke play portion goes through tomorrow, with the low 64 scorers to advance to match play which begins on Wednesday.
Practice rounds for the Kentucky Open are taking place today at Olde Stone Golf Club in Bowling Green. Hopkinsville’s Dayton Jones is among the amateurs in the event, with professionals Mitchell Moore also of Hopkinsville and Tyler Mitchell of Cadiz also in the field. The event begins tomorrow.
