The former Todd County School System maintenance director who was fired for an alleged incident involving a student on a school trip to Lexington in March has been charged by police in Lexington.
The Fayette County District Court docket shows Darrin Cole will be arraigned July 30 at 1 p.m. and he faces one count of first degree sexual abuse.
The morning after the alleged incident happened, Todd County Superintendent Wayne Benningfield issued a news release saying allegations had been made that Cole engaged in inappropriate conduct toward a student on March 28 while serving as a bus driver and chaperone for a Student Technology Leadership Program Conference.
Cole was initially suspended without pay and Assistant Superintendent Mike Taylor conducted an investigation on behalf of the district. Taylor furnished the results of his investigation to Superintendent Benningfield, who made the decision to terminate.
Lexington Police spent over three months investigating before levying charges.
