Momentum continues to build ahead of Saturday’s All American Soap Box Derby in Hopkinsville.
A banquet was held at the James E. Bruce Convention Center tonight to recognize all the young racers participating in this year’s race who have put in a lot of hours and hard-work over the past several weeks to make their dreams of becoming a derby racer a reality.
Soap Box Co-Director Chuck Cummins says the banquet is important because racers are honored for their efforts and it also helps pump them up for the derby.
Cummins says he expects a record turn-out for the derby with all the money raised during the event to benefit the club’s youth programs.
Last year’s race raised about $19,000 and officials hope to surpass their goal for the 2013 derby, which is scheduled to take place this Saturday on Bethel Street and will once again feature an adult oil can race.
