The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a man who has been trying to scam area churches out of money.
Deputy Shawn Bean says the man is going to churches and saying he needs money to get home due to a family tragedy. The Madisonville Police Department says the suspect tells churches his family was murdered in a home invasion in Alabama.
The suspect, described as a black male standing approximately 5-9 and weighing between 180 and 200 pounds, has showed up at churches in Ohio and Muhlenberg counties and police believe he may move on to other areas.
Police say they hope to make the public aware of the activity to help prevent churches from becoming a victim.
