Kentucky State Police has released details on a three-vehicle wreck near the state line on I-24 Friday morning that claimed three lives, including two children.
KSP says the incident happened around 11:20 when a westbound passenger car driven by 38-year old Michael Mahan of Trenton, Georgia left the westbound lanes and crossed the median into eastbound traffic.
His car struck an eastbound U-Haul truck driven by Richard Dooley of Arlington Virginia and then hit an SUV driven by Dooley’s wife—43-year old Lisa Larimer.
Mahan’s youngest daughter—11-year old Megan Mahan—was pronounced dead on the scene. Michael Mahan died from his injuries at Gateway Medical Center and his oldest daughter, 16-year old Savanah Mahan, died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Ms. Larimer is in stable condition at Gateway Medical Center and her two daughters, 7-year old Ariel Dooley and 6-year old Sierra Dooley, are in critical but stable condition at Vanderbilt. Richard Dooley was not injured.
Police say Ms. Larimer and her children were properly restrained. It is unknown if the other four people involved were wearing seat belts.
