The man pulled out of a burning car by Hopkinsville Police Sunday morning continues to recover at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
A spokesperson for the hospital says 33-year old Martez Nelson of Hopkinsville is in critical, but stable condition. Nelson was involved in a single-vehicle wreck on North Drive around 1:20 Sunday morning when he lost control of his vehicle, ran off the road and hit a sign—before over-correcting and striking a bridge.
His vehicle burst into flames—with officers Federico Rodriguez, Jason Brent, Jonathan Sholar, Jason Sears and Sgt. John Thompson arriving within seconds. Officers Brent, Sears and Thompson knocked the flames down with a fire extinguisher while Officer Rodriguez broke a vehicle window to pull Nelson from the wreckage.
Officer Rodriguez sustained minor burns in the rescue.
Sgt. Thompson said Nelson sustained burns to about 40-percent of his body. He was taken to Jennie Stuart Medical Center before being flown to Vanderbilt.
