After months of discussion, votes and debate, Hopkinsville City Council could approve a public smoking ban during tomorrow night’s meeting.
First reading of Mayor Dan Kemp’s ordinance without amendments passed on a 6-to-6 tie two weeks ago when the mayor broke the gridlock with a “yes” vote.
Second reading is on the agenda for the meeting tomorrow night at 6 and Mayor Kemp says he’s hopeful it will pass again and hopes the General Assembly will do the same thing at some point.
Mayor Kemp says if approved, the ordinance would take effect at the beginning of the year.
Supporters of the ordinance say it will benefit the overall health of the community by reducing exposure to second-hand smoke, while critics say it impedes on a business owner’s right to operates as he or she sees fit.
