A motorist who drove through road closure signs at 9th and railroad early this morning wrecked at the crossing, severely injuring his passenger.
The incident happened around 1:30, according to the report from Hopkinsville Police Sgt. Mike Platero, which says the driver of the car was eastbound on 9th when he apparently drove around detour signs and into a ditch before reaching the crossing.
CSX Railroad has closed that crossing since Monday for maintenance work and police say the driver abandoned the vehicle and his passenger after wrecking.
The passenger, 34-year old Christopher Burrell of Hopkinsville, was taken to Jennie Stuart Medical Center before being transferred to Vanderbilt Univeristy Medical Center for treatment of head injuries.
Officials at Vandy listed Burrell in stable condition.
