A Clarksville child is in Vanderbilt University Medical Center after accidentally shooting himself Saturday night.
A news release from Clarksville Police says officers were called to Peachers Ridge Road around 9:50 last night and found a 22-year old woman holding her three-year old son and administering first aid.
The mother, who has a handgun carry permit, told Detective Ronald Parrish that she had left her weapon unattended on a couch while her son was eating at a table in a different area of the apartment.
The woman sat down with her back to the couch and was working on the computer when she heard the sound of a gunshot. She looked to see if there was a hole in the ceiling and then saw her son crying and holding his abdomen.
The child was taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt for a gunshot wound to the stomach and is listed in critical, but stable condition. Police say the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
