A public smoking ban in Hopkinsville will once again be up for discussion when the City Council Committee of the Whole meets tomorrow night.
The ordinance was tabled earlier in the summer after discussion of several potential amendments. Council will head back to “square one” with the committee process and Hopkinsville Mayor Dan Kemp says he wants to see it get done.
Supporters of the ordinance say it would work to benefit the public’s help, while detractors argue it violates the rights of individual business owners. Mayor Kemp says surveys have shown a majority of Hopkinsville residents want a smoking ban.
Some of the proposed amendments have included exclusions for businesses with only a few employees, though that proposition has been questioned based on whether it’s constitutional. The committee will meet in council chambers at 6pm Thursday evening.
