The mourning process is just beginning for the family and loved ones of the two Hopkinsville boys who drowned in a pool near Carbondale, Illinois over the weekend and their former teachers and administrators remembered them this morning.
A moment of silence was marked in memory of 12-year old Alik Monson and 14-year old Lewis Monson of Hopkinsville.
The boys had been visiting friends and an adult at the residence discovered the boys at the bottom of the pool Saturday night just before 7:30. A family member pulled them from the water and began performing CPR until paramedics arrived. The brothers were taken to Carbondale Memorial Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The brothers had both been students at Martin Luther King Elementary and would have attended Christian County Middle together for the first time this week. Superintendent Mary Ann Gemmill began her remarks at this morning’s Teacher Appreciation Breakfast by remembering them.
Police say the incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning.
