Two Hopkinsville children are dead after an apparent drowning near Carbondale, Illinois.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says they received a 911 call around 7:24pm Saturday night regarding a possible drowning at a Dogwood Road residence in Carbondale. Two brothers, 12-year old Alik Monson and 14-year old Lewis Monson of Hopkinsville, were visiting friends in the southern Illinois city and had reportedly been swimming unsupervised.
An adult at the residence discovered the boys at the bottom of the pool and a family member pulled them from the water and began performing CPR until paramedics arrived. The brothers were taken to Carbondale Memorial Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Police say the incident is being investigated as an accidental drowning and that an autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
The boys were students at Christian County Middle School and would have returned to school Wednesday, according to sources.
