An AWOL Fort Campbell soldier convicted of planning to blow up a central Texas restaurant frequented by Fort Hood soldiers will spend life in federal prison.
A judge sentenced Naser Abdo to two consecutive life sentences in Waco this morning. Abdo's face was covered with a white cloth and head with a mesh covering as he told the judge he went AWOL from Fort Campbell after he was to be court-martialed on child pornography charges. The U.S. military had earlier approved Abdo as a "conscientious objector" to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars due to his Islamic beliefs and planned to discharge him before the child porn charges came to light.
Abdo went on to say he will continue his path to jihad. Abdo represented himself in court this morning after recently firing his attorneys. He was convicted in May of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and other charges. Authorities arrested him in a Killeen motel room with explosives in July 2011.
