Longtime Ward 1 Hopkinsville City Councilman Fred Atkins passed away early Sunday morning after suffering multiple strokes in recent months.
Councilman Atkins, who had served the citizens of Ward 1 for over a decade, was perhaps as well known in the city for his duties at the North Drive BB&T bank branch as he was for his life in politics.
Many times customers at the bank would strike up a conversation with Fred while being serviced by another employee. Atkins’ kind demeanor and genuine likeability translated almost perfectly to his duties on council—as he was able to work with members of all political persuasions through the years.
Councilman Charlie Henderson and Atkins were among the two longest tenured members and Henderson described Fred as one of the kindest men he’s ever known.
Hopkinsville Mayor Dan Kemp said Atkins will be sorely missed as a friend and councilman.
Like Henderson, Mayor Kemp said Fred’s positive outlook and kindness will be what is most remembered.
Funeral arrangements for Atkins are incomplete at Gamble Funeral Home.
