A Calloway County Jail inmate escaped custody last night, only to be arrested again in his nearby hometown a short time later.
A news release from Kentucky State Police says 21-year old Bradley Watkins of Mayfield walked away from the jail around 10:30pm. About the same time, a van belonging to Bad Bob’s Barbecue in Murray was reported stolen to the Murray Police Department.
About 20 minutes later, a patrol officer with the Mayfield Police Department checked a suspicious person walking on a city street. It was determined the man was the escaped inmate and he was arrested and turned over to KSP.
Police soon found the stolen van at Wal-Mart in Mayfield and the keys to the van were found on Watkins’ person. Watkins had been serving time for convictions relating to auto theft, burglary, theft, criminal mischief and receiving stolen property.
He now faces escape charges and more charges are pending.
