Congressman Ed Whitfield of Hopkinsville has released a statement on bleak national unemployment numbers released today.
The latest figures show the current national jobless rate at 8.3 percent, which is up for 8.1 percent in April.
Congressman Whitfield says the unemployment rate has remained above 8 percent under President Barack Obama since February of 2009 and says that is unacceptable.
He says it's not just the President's economic policies that are failing, it's also what he calls over-regulation and anti-growth policies that are having a negative impact on an already struggling economy.
As an example, Congressman Whitfield says the Enviornmental Protection Agency's increased regulations on coal will likely take moer coal plants offline and cause more increases in energy costs.
He says the President could help create 20,000 jobs by allowing the Keystone XL Pipeline project to go forward.
