Police in Marshall County now say alcohol was likely a factor in the near head-on collision that required three helicopters to transport the injured to a Nashville hospital.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Tim Reynolds responded to Kentucky Highway 95 near the drive-in movie theater around 9:30 regarding a wreck with injuries. Preliminary investigation determined 24-year old Cory Burkeen of Gilbertsville had crossed the center line suddenly and struck a vehicle driven by 20-year old Lake McGregor of Benton nearly head-on.
Police say Burkeen smelled of alcohol and alcohol bottles were found in the debris from his vehicle. Burkeen was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for his injuries
McGregor and passenger 19-year old Maggie Adams of Calvert City were taken to a local hospital by private vehicle, while 20-year old Shane McKenty and 19-year old Landon Lovett of Benton were also passengers of McGregor and were flown to Vandy.
The investigation continues and police are reconstructing the accident.
