The U.S. Department of Labor this week announced the availability of $15 million in grants through the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program to help homeless veterans get back on their feet.
The program is designed to provide job training services to help veterans succeed in civilian careers.
Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis says the grant announcement is the first step in assisting these veterans gain access to meaningful employment and more stable post-military lives.
The department will likely award 50 grants to serve about 9,000 veterans and funds will be given on a competitive basis to state and local workforce investment boards, local public agencies and non-profit organizations.
The grant money will be used towards providing homeless veterans with occupational, classroom and on-the-job training, job search and placement assistance.
The program is the only federal funded program that focuses solely on helping homeless veterans employment.
