In an almost unbelievable turn of events, another major bridge was struck by a barge in Trigg County early this morning—though little to no damage was done this time.
A news release from the State Highway Department says the US 68 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton was closed after a 14 barge tow struck it around 1:15. The Motor Vessell EVT reported to the U.S. Coast Guard Operations Center that it was pushing 14 empty barges downbown when it made a “controlled landing” against one of the bridge piers when it was hit by a gust of wind.
The pilot initially reported the lead barge had scraped against the pier, but later said the collision was great enough that the lead barge was taking on water. Thankfully, inspectors determined there was no structural damage to the bridge, allowing traffic to resume around 5:30 this morning.
The Highway Department says approximately 5,500 vehicles travel the two-lane bridge over Lake Barkley on an average day. The state hopes to re-open the Eggners Ferry Bridge over Kentucky Lake by Memorial Day weekend after the Delta Mariner cargo vessel knocked out a 322 ft. span on the night of January 26th.
