Health officials have found the source of a recent salmonella outbreak in Hopkins County that killed one person and made several others sick.
The Madisonville Messenger reports Casa Mexicana on Hanson Road in Madisonville is where the outbreak came from. Five people were hospitalized and 61-year old Steve Davis of Hanson died after becoming ill.
Hopkins County Health Department Director Denise Beach told the paper they collected food histories from those who became sick and were led to the restaurant that way. Samples taken from Casa Mexicana matched the salmonella from the clinical cases.
The store's manager said their cooler wasn't working properly at the time of the outbreak. The Health Department temporarily shut them down, but allowed them to reopen after the issues were fixed and the store's staff was retrained. Casa Mexicana was also cited for numerous violations.
