Hopkinsville Police have made good on their promise to enforce school zones heavily in the first several days of the new school year and the emphasis will continue.
Public Information Officer Paul Ray says several citations have already been written in school zones during the morning and afternoons in an effort to make those areas as safe as possible.
Another issue that's arisen has been motorists using the old “frontage road” next to a portion of Virginia Street to get around stopping school buses. Officer Ray says that is illegal and those drivers will be cited, if caught.
Officers have been given discretion to issue citations or warnings to speeders in school zones thus far, but that could change if police don't see a decrease in offenders.
