Hopkinsville Mayor Dan Kemp says he hates to lose any Fort Campbell troops to upcoming Army cutbacks, but he's thankful the outcome wasn't worse.
As previously reported, Fort Campbell's 4th Brigade Combat Team will be deactivated in addition to one at Fort Knox and 10 other bases across the United States. Almost all of the unit's members will be re-assigned to other units, according to officials, who say the local post will only see a net reduction of about 300 soldiers.
Mayor Kemp says the news brought mixed emotions, but certainly could have been much worse.
Other bases across the country weren't as fortunate as Fort Campbell, so Mayor Kemp says this region was fortunate in some ways.
Hopkinsville, Oak Grove and Clarksville rely heavily on the presence of Fort Campbell for economic growth and stability, so all three communities were certainly relieved when all of the details came out that most of the soldiers will be sticking around in other capacities.
