Thursday is the 28th anniversary of the Gander, Newfoundland plane crash that killed 248 Fort Campbell soldiers and eight crew members on the way home from a peace-keeping mission in the Sinai Peninsula and they will be remembered in an afternoon ceremony in Hopkinsville.
Christian County Chamber of Commerce President Carter Hendricks says the remembrance will be at 2 o'clock at Fort Campbell Memorial Park on Fort Campbell Boulevard.
Hendricks says the Gander plane crash was a transformational experience for the community, which formed a closer connection to Fort Campbell and the 101st Airborne Division.
The Arrow Air DC-8 plane they were aboard crashed upon takeoff. The Soldiers, from several different military units at Fort Campbell, were all attached to 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. A separate ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on post.
