The local delegation to Frankfort is promoting Wednesday as “Military Consumer Protection Day.”
A joint news release from State Representatives Myron Dossett and John Tilley and State Senator Whitney Westerfield says the Federal Trade Commission is sponsoring the one-day event after receiving 62,000 complaints from military families across the nation in 2012 of high-pressured sales tactics used against them.
Kentucky had a disproportionate share of those complaints at 18,000. Representative Tilley says the day puts a spotlight the problem of individuals attempting to take advantage of those serving their country.
Representative Dossett says he's received complaints from constituents in Christian County who said someone attempted to take advantage of them while a loved one was deployed overseas. A website for the educational effort is at military.ncpw.gov.
